DigiWorld
Series: This is a story about two worlds. Our world and the digital world. Noone knows why the digital world was created, or how. In the digital world there are no humans. Instead, it is populated by Digimon, Digital Monsters.

There are three types of Digimon.
Data: Everyday, peaceful digimon. They are the common folk.
Virus: These are Digimon who seek to wreck havoc in the digital world. Most are the technical "evil" but some are just doing what they were programmed to do.
Vaccine: Good Digimon who fight the Virus Digimon.

The Virus Digimon were actually overtaking much of the Digital World at the start of the series. Few powerful Vaccine Digimon had the strength to stand up to the Evil Digimon.
Enter the DigiDestined: To quote the song "Seven young kids go to camp for the summer. Wined up living in a digital land." These seven kids are sucked into the digital world one night and meet 7 Digimon. They are small and cute but not very powerful. They also notice they have strange items, which they discover are called DigiVices.

These allow the Digimon to Digivolve to more powerful versions of themselves.
The basic "Digivolutions" are as follows.
In Training: This is the most basic form. Usually the digimon is little more than a ball of fur. 90% of this form use the same attack.
Rookie: This is the easiest for most Digimon to maintain. They only digivolve below this stage if they are extremely weak or tired.
Champion: While many of the Virus had reached this stage over many years, the only way for most digimon to reach this more powerful stage is with the help of a digivice. A digimon partnered with a Digidestined can now digivolve to this and higher levels.
Ultimate: This is a very powerful digimon. A crest of elements is required to reach this level. Only the original 8 (yes there is one more) Digidestined can reach this level through Digivolution. (Some like the champions have reached this level over time.) One Ultimate is usually more than a match for anywhere from 5-10 Champions.
Mega: At the start only 4 Digimon are known to be of the Mega level. These are the evil Dark Masters. Some of the Digidestined Digimon eventually reach this stage.
Sublevels: In the Second season Digivolving is somewhat harder. The Digivices have been crippled a bit by The Digimon Emperor (A masked Digidestined kid dedicated to Evil). This means they cannot reach the champion level. Even when they are later able to get to champion, they have no Crests and so can't move higher. The need for new types of digivolving came into play.
Armored Champion: Thru the use of a DigiEgg, fossils with powers of the ancient Digimon, a rookie can ArmorDigivolve. This puts them at the equivelent of a Champion.
DNA Ultimate: As stated before, when the Digimon Emperor was no longer limiting the digivolutions, the Second Gen crew still had no Crests. They found however, that two digimon could merge together as one single Digimon. They were mentally linked whenever merged together as were their Digidestined.
DNA Mega: Only one DNA Ultimate has ever been seen to digivolve to the Mega stage.

Digimon 03 (season 3): Is just starting and operates on a little different premise. The first two seasons were just a tv show but this is real. They have added Digimon Cards and a Card reader that allows a card to be swiped and "Upgrade" a digimon that is fighting. This is called DigiModify. While this is a blatant attempt to sell toys, it's an interesting twist.
We are all wondering just how "real" the TV show the kids in 03 always talk about will turn out to be. After all, Kari, the 8th Digidestined grew up to be a teacher... and isn't that Kari's voice in the new kids English teacher? Hmmm.
